The Maldivian Democratic Party has submitted a resolution calling for a national referendum on the Ras Male development agreement before it is finalised.
The move follows growing public and political debate over the project, which involves land allocation to Eagle Hills, a company linked to Emirati businessman Mohamed Alabbar. Opposition figures argue that transferring significant reclaimed land requires broader public consent.
Party leaders have warned of street protests if the government does not hold a vote by mid-November. The resolution was passed by the MDP National Council with strong support from senior members.
The government has described the project as an economic initiative to diversify the economy and attract investment. Critics, including some civil society groups, have raised concerns about sovereignty, environmental impact, and the long-term implications of foreign involvement in large-scale land development.
The issue remains a focal point of political discussion in the Maldives.
