The Maldivian Democratic Party has said the National Drug Agency is in a “deep coma,” alleging that its administration has effectively collapsed.
The party pointed to a shortage of qualified leadership, inactive oversight councils, and inadequate clinical resources. MDP figures argued that these shortcomings have left rehabilitation and treatment services unable to meet demand.
The government has maintained that efforts to strengthen rehabilitation programmes are continuing and that drug abuse remains a priority under the Ministry of Homeland Security.
Drug-related issues continue to be among the most persistent social challenges in the Maldives, with periodic reports of incidents involving staff and patients at treatment facilities.
The NDA’s board has undergone several changes in recent years, and responsibility for the agency was moved from the Health Ministry to the Homeland Security portfolio under the current administration.
