The Maldivian Democratic Party National Council has passed a resolution calling for a public referendum on the Rasmale' project and direct action if the government does not respond, despite Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed expressing support for the development.

The resolution, submitted by Kolamaafushi Constituency President Mahfooz Saeed, calls for publication of the commercial terms, suspension of any transfer of rights pending a vote, and implementation of the public decision. It was supported by a large majority of members present.

Nasheed has argued that opposing Eagle Hills chairman Mohamed Alabbar could harm relations with the UAE and existing investments. He has warned against what he described as xenophobic rhetoric and said the party should focus on unpublished terms rather than the project itself.

Other members have maintained that the party must oppose the allocation of reclaimed land without public consultation. The internal differences highlight ongoing divisions within the MDP over major development projects.

The government has said the project will proceed under Maldivian law.
