The Maldivian Democratic Party National Council has passed a resolution calling for a referendum on the Rasmale’ project and warning that the party will take direct action if a public vote is not held.
The resolution, approved by 57 of 58 members present, asks the government to publish the commercial terms of the agreement with Eagle Hills, suspend any transfer of rights over the reclaimed land, and implement the outcome of a referendum. It was introduced by Kolamaafushi Constituency President Mahfooz Saeed.
Former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail said during the debate that Rasmale’ had been reclaimed for housing at significant public cost and expressed concern over reports that control of the land was being handed to a foreign company. Former President Mohamed Nasheed has also raised concerns about the direction of the party’s stance on the project.
Eagle Hills signed commercial terms on 21 September for a large development that includes hotels, branded residences, a marina and waterfront facilities. Critics argue the arrangement effectively cedes long-term control of publicly reclaimed land without a public mandate.
The government has said the project will deliver substantial economic benefits. The MDP resolution adds to pressure from petitions, planned protests and earlier legal challenges seeking to block the deal.
