The Criminal Court has sentenced Hussain Nabeel of Sh. Komandoo/Vinares to 24 years and nine months in prison plus a fine of MVR 100,000 for trafficking diamorphine into Addu City.
The court found that Nabeel attempted to smuggle 1,998.7 grams of diamorphine on a Maldivian flight from Velana International Airport to Gan International Airport on 6 February 2020. Police intelligence led to a search on arrival; the drug was discovered inside a red-wave branded trimmer container hidden in a white packet within a blue plastic bag in his possession.
Prosecutors said Nabeel was travelling to deliver the drugs within four hours and that a person named Sharwan Ibrahim had arranged the ticket and money. Nabeel denied knowledge of the contents of the bag and rejected a controlled-delivery offer.
The court accepted the prosecution case as proven beyond reasonable doubt and imposed the sentence after accounting for time already spent in custody.
