The Criminal Court has sentenced a man to prison for stealing cash and perfume from the deputy principal’s room at Iskandhar School in Malé.
Mohamed Maheel of Makunudhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, was convicted of theft and of knowingly entering a place without permission. He entered the school on the night of 16 June this year and took money and two bottles of perfume from a drawer in the deputy principal’s room.
The stolen cash included MVR 1,000 collected for students who could not afford interval snacks, MVR 5,460 intended for the school netball coach, and MVR 9,000 belonging to the deputy principal. The perfume bottles were valued at MVR 2,000 each.
Maheel admitted the charges during the trial and said the events occurred as described. He was sentenced to nine months and 18 days for the theft. After accounting for time already spent in detention, he must serve nine months and two days. He was also ordered to pay MVR 15,460 in compensation to the deputy principal within one month through the Civil Court.
A separate three-month sentence was imposed for the unauthorised entry. The court noted that the state had filed two charges against him.
The case was reported by local media citing the court judgment. No further appeals or additional charges were mentioned at the time of the ruling.
