Male’ City Council has voted to back the public movement opposing the Rasmale’ land deal with Eagle Hills.

The decision follows earlier statements by the mayor and individual councillors expressing concern over the lack of detailed public information about the commercial terms. The council resolution calls for full disclosure and supports demands for a public referendum before the permanent agreement is signed.

The 500-hectare allocation at Fushidhiggaru lagoon has become one of the most contentious issues in current politics. Opposition parties, civil society groups and some religious organisations have joined calls for greater scrutiny.

City Council officials said the resolution reflects the views of many residents who want a direct say in decisions that affect long-term use of reclaimed state land. The government has maintained that the project will accelerate housing and infrastructure development under full Maldivian legal control.

The council’s stance adds another formal body to the list of institutions seeking a public vote on the matter.
