A Maldivian fisherman has represented the country at the FAO Summit on Small-Scale Fisheries in Rome.

Samrath Hassan, from GDh. Madaveli and owner of the dhoni Kamana, attended the summit organised by the Food and Agriculture Organization. The meeting brought together fishers, governments, associations and research bodies to discuss implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries.

Hassan shared information on the role of fishers in the Maldivian industry. As a small island developing state, the Maldives has emphasised the dependence of its people and economy on healthy oceans and sustainable fisheries.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources highlighted the participation as part of the country’s ongoing engagement with international efforts on ocean resources.
