President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has established the Maldives Tertiary Hospitals Group (MTHG) to manage all state-run tertiary hospitals and those being developed to tertiary level under a single governing board.

The move dissolves the Male' City Group of Hospitals and the boards of Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital, Laamu Gan Regional Hospital, Dr Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital in Thinadhoo, and Addu Equatorial Hospital.

The President's Office said the hybrid centralised model aims to strengthen the national healthcare system, improve resource sharing, and reduce duplication. The board will operate under presidential guidance in coordination with the Ministry of Health.

Dr Abdul Azeez Yoosuf has been appointed Chairperson, with Hussain Haleem as Vice-Chairperson. The 18-member board includes hospital chief executives and specialists.

Facilities under the group include Dharumavantha Hospital, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Hulhumalé Hospital, Villimalé Hospital, the Maldives Blood Services, and the Thalassemia Centre, along with regional hospitals.

The restructuring follows earlier announcements that the changes would be implemented over three to four months to improve service quality without increasing overall staffing.
