The Maldives has recorded 2,379 traffic accidents so far in 2026, according to official figures that highlight ongoing road safety challenges.

The number reflects a steady increase in incidents on roads in Malé, Hulhumalé and connecting highways. Speeding, failure to observe traffic rules and the growing volume of motorcycles and cars are frequently cited as contributing factors.

Recent high-profile cases, including collisions involving police vehicles, have drawn additional attention to enforcement. Police have increased patrols and are preparing to notify drivers of violations by text message and email under the Land Transport Act.

Road safety campaigns have emphasised the need for helmet use, adherence to speed limits and careful behaviour on bridges and main roads. Despite these efforts, accident numbers remain elevated compared with previous years.

Authorities say data collection is improving and that targeted enforcement in high-risk areas such as hospital zones, school crossings and major thoroughfares will continue.
