Maldives and Pakistan have signed 20 memoranda of understanding covering areas including healthcare, defence, education, trade, finance, technology, tourism and climate change.

The agreements were exchanged in Islamabad in the presence of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who is on a three-day state visit. One of the deals covers the launch of direct flights between the two countries.

The visit is the first high-level engagement in a decade and coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations. President Muizzu is accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and a high-level delegation of ministers and officials.

The last visit by a Maldivian president to Pakistan was in 2015 by Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
