The Maldives aims to play an active leadership role within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel has said.

Speaking ahead of or in connection with OIC meetings, the minister highlighted the country’s interest in contributing more substantively to discussions on development, climate, and other shared concerns among member states.

The Maldives is a long-standing member of the OIC. Officials have previously noted the importance of the organisation as a platform for coordination on matters of common interest, including support for small island developing states.

Foreign Minister Khaleel is among those expected to represent the country at relevant ministerial gatherings. Recent preparations have included participation in meetings of OIC foreign ministers.

The stated ambition reflects a broader foreign policy emphasis on multilateral engagement and on raising the profile of issues relevant to the Maldives, such as climate vulnerability and sustainable development.
