The People’s Majlis has rejected a resolution calling for the Judicial Service Commission to be held accountable for the dismissal of Supreme Court justices, preventing the motion from reaching floor debate.
The resolution, submitted by Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim, noted that the Prosecutor General’s Office had declined to press charges against Justices Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir, citing insufficient evidence. It argued that their removal from the bench was therefore without legal basis and that JSC members should be held responsible.
Twenty-eight members of the ruling People’s National Congress voted against accepting the resolution for debate, while seven voted in favour. The rejection occurred under recent amendments to standing orders that ended the automatic right to debate private members’ resolutions.
Justices Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir were removed in May 2025 following a JSC recommendation and a parliamentary vote of 68 members, amid allegations of undue influence. A third justice, Husnu Suood, had earlier resigned. After a police investigation initiated by the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Prosecutor General closed the case in September 2026 for lack of evidence.
The resolution did not proceed to discussion. No further action on the matter has been scheduled.
