The People's Majlis has rejected a no-confidence motion against Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed.
The motion, submitted in August by 13 MPs from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, failed during today's sitting. Fifty-four ruling People's National Congress MPs voted to retain the minister, while only 10 voted in favour of the motion. Two members abstained.
The opposition charged Saeed with neglecting constitutional responsibilities, failing to remain accountable to Parliament, and mismanaging the economy. Key concerns included the rise in black-market US dollar rates, resulting increases in commodity prices, alleged failure to protect private sector businesses, and amendments to the Special Economic Zone Act.
During the debate, Saeed defended the government's fiscal record. He highlighted that nearly USD 2 billion in foreign exchange had been allocated under the current administration, compared with lower figures under the previous government over a similar period. He also pointed to ongoing efforts to expand port capacity and increase strategic food reserves.
The outcome marks the second failed attempt by the opposition to remove a cabinet member this term. The motion had been on the parliamentary agenda after the General Committee granted the minister one hour to respond to the allegations.
Saeed remains in office as the government continues to face criticism over foreign currency shortages and the cost of living.
