Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that 115 hectares of land have now been reclaimed at Giraavarufalhu, marking 68 percent completion of the 167.15-hectare housing reclamation project for Malé residents.

According to The Edition, MACL deployed two trailing suction hopper dredgers—the Queen of the Netherlands and the Orange Dredger—to accelerate dredging of the remaining 97.15 hectares that began in January, building upon 70 hectares previously reclaimed during the first phase under the Maldives Fund Management Corporation Limited (MFMC).

Outlining the revised residential allocation following updates to the master land use plan, The Edition reported:

"Following changes brought to the land use plan, a decision has now been made to issue 4,072 land plots from Giraavarufalhu: 2,605 plots of 1,250 square feet, 1,213 plots of 1,650 square feet, 253 plots of 2,050 square feet, and one plot of 2,450 square feet."

Financing and plot handover timeline

The dredging milestone follows the government's decision this week to extend an MVR 650 million loan to MACL to finance the completion of the Giraavarufalhu reclamation works, as reported by Adhadhu.

Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib previously stated during a site inspection alongside President Dr Mohamed Muizzu that boundary marking, surveying, and formal handover of residential plots to recipients will take top priority as soon as dredging is completed.

According to The Edition, plot registration procedures are scheduled to begin prior to the finalisation of reclamation works, while water supply, sewerage, and electricity networks will be installed across the newly formed land immediately afterward.
