A man who began a hunger strike in Malé to protest a serial harasser and drug-related disturbances in his neighbourhood has ended the demonstration after receiving assurances from senior officials.

Mohamed Saeed started the strike to demand a permanent solution to long-running public nuisance issues in the Henveiru area. He said he would not stop until the government publicly guaranteed decisive action.

Reports indicate the strike lasted about 35 hours. It ended following meetings with the Home Minister and the Prosecutor General. Authorities pledged to investigate and take further steps within the legal framework to address the complaints.

The case has highlighted concerns about the effectiveness of responses to repeated public disturbances involving substance use and harassment. Residents have called for stronger coordination between police, local authorities and the justice system.

Officials said they would continue monitoring the situation and follow through on the commitments made during the discussions.
