Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has completed the installation of balcony railings in 273 units across 220 apartments in Hulhumale as of mid-October 2026.

The work follows widespread requests from residents after two children fell from buildings in Hulhumale Phase 2, one of them fatally. HDC opened a process for residents to request railing installations starting from late September.

According to HDC, 1,011 people submitted requests for railings in their apartments. Of these, work has been finished in 273 units in 220 apartments, with remaining requests still being processed.

HDC has also set a deadline of 28 October for residents of FDC flats in Hulhumale Phase 2 who have made unauthorised changes to utility balconies to restore them to original condition. Failure to comply could result in further action by the corporation.

The installations aim to address longstanding safety concerns about balcony access in multi-storey housing in the reclaimed island.

Residents have welcomed the progress, though many continue to monitor the pace of remaining work. HDC has stated that the programme will continue until all valid requests are addressed.
