Australia Maldives Friendship Association (AMFA) and The Reading Room jointly organised special activities at Guraidhoo School in Kaafu Atoll to mark International Literacy Day and International Girl Child Day.

The programme took place in the school’s midday playground with strong support from the school. A total of 248 students from grades 1 to 10 are enrolled; participants included all students from grades 3 to 9.

Australia’s Second Secretary at the High Commission, Sasha McGillan, attended and addressed the students on the reasons for observing International Girl Child Day and on the rights of girls. She also shared insights from her work in the diplomatic service.

The Reading Room conducted dedicated storytelling sessions aimed at fostering a love of reading, particularly for students from grades 3 to 7.

Organisers reported that the activities increased students’ awareness of important issues and were completed successfully. The event forms part of ongoing community efforts to promote education and gender equality in the atolls.
