President Mohamed Muizzu has established the Maldives Tertiary Hospitals Group to bring all government-operated tertiary hospitals under a single governing board.

The decision dissolves the governing bodies of the Male' City Group of Hospitals and five other hospitals: Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital, Gan Regional Hospital, Dr Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital, and Addu Equatorial Hospital. The new group will oversee institutions including Dharumavantha Hospital, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Hulhumalé Hospital, Vilimalé Hospital, the Maldivian Blood Service, and related centres.

The President's Office said the hybrid centralised model aims to strengthen the national healthcare system and improve coordination of services. The governing board will operate under presidential directives and remain accountable to the President while being affiliated with the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare. Dr Abdul Azeez Yoosuf has been appointed Chairperson, with Hussain Haleem as Vice Chairperson.

The restructuring places administrative operations of key facilities in the capital region and selected atoll hospitals under unified oversight. The board is expected to direct policy and operations across the network of tertiary-level public hospitals.
