Land reclamation at Giraavaru Falhu has resumed after a five-month hiatus, with 115 hectares now completed out of a planned 167.15 hectares, according to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).
MACL announced the progress on social media, stating that the work is proceeding at a steady pace. The dredger Queen of the Netherlands remains deployed at the site. The company did not provide a new completion timeline.
The update follows confirmation that the government issued an MVR 650.7 million loan to MACL to cover reclamation costs. The loan appears in current-year expenditure estimates but was not part of the originally approved 2026 budget.
The project is managed by Marine and Integrated Infrastructure Development, a MACL subsidiary. It was originally launched in May 2023 under the previous administration through the Maldives Fund Management Corporation, with Capital Marine Engineering and Construction holding the initial contract.
MACL took over after the change of government. Work had paused for several months amid fuel and operational issues before resuming. The expanded footprint aims to support housing allocations for residents in the Malé region under the Binveriyaa scheme.
Officials have previously said plots would be registered and handed over once reclamation is finished. No revised handover date has been announced.
