Land reclamation at Giraavaru Falhu has advanced to 115 hectares, representing 68.8 percent of the planned 167.15-hectare total, according to Maldives Airports Company Limited.

The company stated that reclamation work has resumed and is progressing with the dredger Queen of the Netherlands playing a central role. Residential plots from the lagoon have already been allocated under the Binveriyaa housing scheme, and authorities plan to issue 4,072 plots once the project is complete.

The project began under the previous administration in May 2023, managed by the Maldives Fund Management Corporation, with an initial target of 120 hectares. Work stalled after the change of government, at which point 56 hectares had been reclaimed. MACL assumed responsibility and restarted operations in January 2026, expanding the footprint.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has previously inspected the site and announced completion targets that were later revised. Housing Minister Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed has said registration and handover of plots will begin once reclamation finishes. The government has allocated an unbudgeted MVR 650 million loan to MACL this year to support the works.

Satellite analysis by local media earlier indicated periods of limited activity, but the latest MACL update confirms renewed progress toward the housing goal in the Greater Malé area.
