Former Vice President Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that the Rasmale’ deal would end the Maldives’ legal identity as a 100 percent Muslim nation.

Jameel argued that granting long-term control of reclaimed land to foreign developers and allowing associated residency arrangements would effectively alter the constitutional character of the state. He called for the agreement to be halted and for full public disclosure of its terms.

His comments reflect broader concerns raised by opposition figures and some religious leaders about the potential demographic and legal consequences of the project. The government has rejected claims that the deal would change the country’s religious status, stating that all arrangements must comply with existing law.

The Rasmale’ project involves the transfer of significant areas of reclaimed land for tourism and residential development. Critics say the absence of a referendum and limited parliamentary scrutiny leaves the public without adequate input on a decision with long-term implications.

Jameel has been a consistent critic of the current administration’s approach to foreign investment and land policy. His latest statement is expected to fuel further debate ahead of any parliamentary action on related legislation.

The MDP has submitted a resolution seeking a public referendum, while other parties have organised protests and public meetings.
