Former vice-president Faisal Naseem has said that addressing the housing crisis in Malé would be the foremost priority of an MDP-led government.

Speaking in a social media post, Naseem emphasised the need for door-to-door engagement to understand public needs directly. He specifically highlighted the housing difficulties faced by residents in the capital as requiring an urgent solution.

“If we form the government, one of the issues we will work hardest to solve is this,” he stated, referring to the housing problem.

Naseem is contesting the MDP presidential primary. Other candidates include former party president Abdullah Shahid, former chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and Hulhumalé South MP Dr Ahmed Shamheed. The party has yet to announce a date for the primary ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

If selected as the nominee, Naseem has indicated that Malé mayor Azim Adam would not serve as his running mate. The statement comes amid ongoing discussions within the opposition about policy priorities and candidate selection.

Housing remains one of the most pressing issues for Malé residents, with limited land and high demand driving prices and waiting lists.
