Former president Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that learning about and understanding the pension system is the individual responsibility of every citizen.

Speaking at the launch of a "Three Generation Work" event organised by the Pension Office in Haa Dhaal Hanimaadhoo, he described successful pension systems in developed countries as essential public services and an important form of social security between the state and citizens.

He noted that continuous employment and good health cannot be guaranteed throughout life, and that family responsibilities often increase with age. Even a modest pension provides important financial support for households.

The former president emphasised that the scheme benefits society as a whole rather than only individual account holders. He urged people to use the information available on the Pension Office website to understand contribution rules and benefits.

The event forms part of the office's outreach to raise awareness of the national pension framework among different generations.

Officials have repeatedly stressed the importance of consistent contributions for long-term retirement security.
