Former Male' City Councillor Mohamed Aiman Ismail has been arrested in connection with a sexual abuse case.
Police stated that a major portion of the investigation had already been completed by the time of the arrest. They are consulting the Prosecutor General's Office on remaining steps.
The allegations first surfaced in October last year after his former wife posted details on social media. Concerns had been raised about the pace of the inquiry and the fact that Aiman remained at liberty for an extended period.
Police have not explained the delay between the initial report and the arrest.
Aiman previously served as councillor for the Maafannu South constituency.
