Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has appealed to the High Court against the court order authorising his arrest.
Shahid was arrested on the night of 2 November under a judicial warrant on suspicion of sexually abusing a person under the age of 18. He was subsequently remanded in custody for 30 days while police continue their investigation.
According to High Court records, the appeal was filed the following day. The court has not yet decided whether to register the case for consideration.
Shortly before his arrest, Shahid posted on social media denying the allegations. He described the claims as baseless and politically motivated, urging people not to spread unverified information.
Shahid has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs under two administrations and as President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly. He is currently seeking the Maldivian Democratic Party’s presidential nomination for the 2028 election.
Police have not released further details of the investigation.
