Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid was arrested late on Monday night in connection with allegations of sexually abusing a minor under the age of 18.

The Maldives Police Service confirmed the arrest, stating that Shahid, 64, was taken into custody at approximately 9:59 pm under a court order. Officers executed the warrant at his residence in Hulhumale’. He was initially taken to the Hulhumale’ Police Station before being transferred to the police custody centre in Dhoonidhoo.

Police said the case remains under investigation. Reports indicate the allegations concern repeated abuse while Shahid held a position of trust. The alleged victim has been described in some accounts as a 15-year-old girl under his care, though police have not confirmed the precise age or further details.

Shahid, who previously served as President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly and as Speaker of the People’s Majlis, is currently campaigning for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential nomination ahead of the 2028 election. He earlier led the MDP before stepping down from that role.

Minutes before his arrest, Shahid posted on X denying the claims. He described circulating stories as baseless and politically motivated attempts to damage his character, and urged the public not to spread unsubstantiated rumours.

The arrest comes amid ongoing political tensions surrounding the Rasmale’ development project. Shahid has not been convicted of any offence, and the allegations remain unproven. Further court proceedings on remand are expected.

Shahid has held several senior positions, including Minister of Foreign Affairs under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih from 2018 to 2023. In 2021 he received the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin, the highest state honour.
