Rilwan Shareef, former Chairman of Dhiraagu and former Managing Director of Villa Air, has died while undergoing treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Malé.
Shareef held several senior roles in government and business. He served as Deputy Minister and State Minister at the Ministry of Finance, as a Director on the Board of the Maldives Stock Exchange, and as a Director at the Telecommunications Authority of Maldives. He was educated in Australia.
Dhiraagu issued a statement expressing sadness at his passing. The company noted that he had served on its board on multiple occasions, including at the time of the company’s incorporation in 1988, and most recently as Chairperson from January 2014 to February 2015. The statement said his contributions would be remembered and extended condolences to his family.
The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. Shareef’s career spanned decades in public administration and the private sector, particularly in telecommunications and aviation.
His death comes months after the retirement of long-serving Dhiraagu CEO Ismail Rasheed, who stepped down in July after nearly 40 years with the company.
