Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam has cautioned that negative rhetoric surrounding foreign investment in the Maldives could strain bilateral relations.
In an interview with Mihaaru News, the minister stated that political interests should not obstruct investments intended to benefit Maldivians. She argued that foreign investment and external assistance are essential for advancing the government’s development programme while meeting debt obligations.
Her comments addressed criticism of the Maldives Waterfront and Marina project proposed by Abu Dhabi-based developer Eagle Hills. The company signed a commercial terms agreement with the government in September 2026 setting out the broad framework for the Ras Malé development.
Adam noted that undermining relations with major Islamic and Arab countries would damage important partnerships. She said political rhetoric driven by personal interests should not prevent Maldivians from receiving potential economic benefits.
The minister highlighted that bringing such investment represents a significant change and that the project includes housing development, a marina and other services. She emphasised that relations with key partners require careful management.
The remarks come amid ongoing political debate over large-scale foreign investment projects. Officials have stressed that commercial operations must comply with the Constitution and applicable laws.
Adam’s statements underscore the government’s view that constructive engagement on investment supports national development goals.
