Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam has warned that negative remarks about foreign investments in the Maldives could damage bilateral relations, particularly amid debate over the Eagle Hills development in Ras Malé.

In an interview with Mihaaru News, the minister said political interests should not obstruct investments intended to benefit Maldivians. She argued that foreign investment and external assistance are essential to advancing the government’s development programme while meeting substantial debt obligations.

Her comments responded to criticism of the Maldives Waterfront and Marina project proposed by Abu Dhabi-based developer Eagle Hills. The company signed a commercial terms agreement with the government on 21 September 2026.

Adam said undermining relations with major Islamic and Arab countries would damage important partnerships. She stated that political rhetoric driven by personal interests should not prevent Maldivians from receiving potential economic benefits.

The minister described bringing such a large investment as a revolutionary change and highlighted the project’s potential for housing, marina development and related services.

The remarks come as the Ras Malé project continues to generate political and public discussion over land use, ownership and foreign involvement.
