Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel (Irthisham) has travelled to Iraq on an official visit, according to local media reports on Friday.
The reports indicated that the minister left for the trip without providing an immediate detailed agenda. Official visits by Maldivian foreign ministers typically cover bilateral relations, consular matters and regional cooperation.
Iraq and the Maldives maintain diplomatic relations, with both countries participating in multilateral forums including the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. Previous engagements have included discussions on trade, labour and international issues.
No statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs detailing the objectives of the visit had been issued at the time of the reports. The ministry regularly posts updates on official travel once programmes are confirmed.
The trip adds to a series of recent foreign engagements by senior Maldivian officials.
