Police have completed their investigation into a drugs case involving film stars arrested in Vilimalé and sent the file to the Prosecutor General’s Office.
The operation on 8 October led to the arrest of actor Ahmed Azmeel (Azey), Ismail Jumaih, Mohamed Vishal (Roman) and Azmeel’s brother Shahil Mohamed. Police said three of the four have already been released from custody and the fourth was expected to be released the same day.
Criminal court remand orders indicated that the men were found with narcotics at the apartment where they were staying. The quantity met the threshold for trafficking charges, and some of those arrested had previous criminal records.
Police noted that if the court later orders their re-detention as the case proceeds, the orders will be carried out. The matter remains with the Prosecutor General for a decision on charges.
The case has drawn attention because of the involvement of figures from the Maldivian film industry.
