Maldivian Democratic Party figure Fayyaz Ismail has criticised recent pay increases for Cabinet ministers and the Speaker of Parliament, describing them as an insult to the public.

Fayyaz said the hikes come at a time when ordinary Maldivians are dealing with higher commodity prices and economic pressure. He questioned the priority of expanding compensation for senior officials while broader cost-of-living challenges remain unaddressed.

Parliamentary committees have approved the adjustments for ministers, the Speaker and councillors. The government has not publicly detailed the full justification for the increases in recent statements.

Opposition parties have used the issue to highlight concerns over public expenditure and the perceived disconnect between official compensation and household finances. Fayyaz has repeatedly called for greater restraint in government spending.

The pay revisions follow a series of fiscal decisions under the current administration.
