Opposition politician Mohamed Fayyaz has questioned why the government needs a dedicated real-estate bill to implement the Rasmalé agreement with Eagle Hills.
Fayyaz described the project as “just another tourism development” and asked why ordinary existing laws would not suffice. His remarks come amid broader criticism of the secrecy surrounding the commercial terms and the long-term lease of reclaimed land.
The government has indicated that legislative changes may be required before the final agreement is signed. Critics argue that any such bill should be subject to full parliamentary scrutiny given the scale of the land involved and the public funds already spent on reclamation.
The debate continues as reclamation work on the Eagle Hills sites resumes.
