The Ministry of Economic Development has issued notices to 17 shops in Malé for failing to display prices on goods offered for sale.

The ministry said it conducted special inspections of trading outlets in the capital between 15 and 20 October. Of the 34 shops examined, only 17 were displaying prices in line with the law. The remaining 17 received notices requiring them to comply.

Under an earlier announcement on 14 October, traders must clearly mark the price of each item on display, either by writing it, printing a label or fixing a tag so that customers can see the price without asking.

The Consumer Protection Act allows inspections of trading premises. Article 84 of the Act provides for action against those who sell goods without displaying prices. The ministry has urged all traders to meet the requirements promptly.

Price display rules are intended to protect consumers and promote transparency in retail trading. Further inspections are expected as part of ongoing enforcement.
