The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources has extended the deadline for nominations for the annual Fishermen's Day awards.

The awards recognise individuals and organisations that have made notable contributions to fishing, processing, mariculture and related activities. Categories typically cover long-service fishermen, innovative operators, women in fisheries and community-level initiatives.

An extended window allows more time for island councils, cooperatives and industry associations to compile supporting documents and submit candidates. The ministry has not announced a new closing date in the statements available, but the extension was confirmed through local media reports on 2 November.

Fishermen's Day is observed nationally to highlight the economic and cultural importance of the sector, which remains a major source of employment and export earnings outside tourism.
