The Criminal Court of the Maldives has ordered the detention of a Maldivian man arrested by police after he allegedly brandished a sharp weapon and issued violent threats against family members inside a residence in the capital.

The suspect was brought before the bench for a remand hearing on Saturday following an emergency police intervention prompted by distress reports from relatives.

Police response and court proceedings

According to court filings and police reports, the suspect engaged in an aggressive altercation inside a family home in Malé, during which he allegedly armed himself with a knife and threatened occupants with physical harm. Responding officers subdued the individual at the scene and took him into custody without reported physical injuries to the household members.

During the remand hearing, state prosecutors submitted evidence indicating that the suspect's release posed a tangible danger to the victims and household safety. The presiding judge determined that there was sufficient probable cause to justify institutional detention:

"The court observed that the nature of the allegations involved weapons and immediate threats to domestic safety, warranting custodial remand while investigative bodies conclude evidence gathering," court sources confirmed.

The judge remanded the suspect into judicial custody for a period of 15 days to allow investigators to complete victim statements and weapon forensic analyses.

Tackling domestic disputes and violence

The Maldives Police Service reiterated that it enforces zero tolerance regarding threats of violence and the use of weapons in domestic settings. Authorities urged members of the public experiencing domestic intimidation, coercion, or violent threats to utilize emergency helplines to facilitate timely intervention and safeguard vulnerable household members.
