The Criminal Court has ordered the 15-day detention of a man accused of causing repeated public nuisance in Malé.

Ahmed Fairish, 43, from Haa Alif Hoarafushi, was arrested after Mohamed Saeed staged a hunger strike outside a police station to protest the lack of action on longstanding complaints. Fairish faces allegations of intimidation, damage to property, assault and obstructing police duties.

The court found sufficient grounds based on the complainant's statement, police reports and detention logs. Fairish has denied the charges. He has a previous record of detention for similar matters.

Saeed ended his hunger strike after more than 35 hours when officials gave assurances that the case would be addressed. He said he would continue to monitor whether those promises are kept.

Police have noted that Fairish has been detained and released on earlier occasions only to resume the behaviour. The current remand runs until early November.

The case highlights ongoing challenges in addressing persistent public nuisance complaints in the capital.
