Former foreign minister and former MDP president Abdulla Shahid has appealed his arrest warrant to the High Court.

High Court records show the appeal was filed on 4 November. The court has not yet decided whether to register the case.

Shahid was arrested on the night of 2 November under a Criminal Court warrant. Police said the investigation concerns allegations of sexual abuse involving a person under 18. He was later remanded for 30 days.

Shortly before his arrest, Shahid posted on X denying the claims. He described them as "politically motivated rumours being spread to assassinate my character" and "baseless lies," urging people not to spread unverified information.

Shahid has served as foreign minister under both Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, as president of the 76th United Nations General Assembly, and as Speaker of the People's Majlis. He recently stepped down as MDP president after announcing he would seek the party's 2028 presidential nomination.

Police have not released further details of the allegations. The remand order has not been published on the court website.
