An experimental farm in Addu City has produced the Maldives’ first coffee cherries, marking a milestone in local agriculture.

Zuvaan Dhanduveriya farm, operated by Ramsey Hussain on Meedhoo island, successfully fruited coffee trees for the first time in the country. The farm, known for growing dragon fruit, vegetables and other crops using sustainable methods, has been expanding its trials.

Hussain shared images of the ripe cherries on social media, describing it as history in the making for Maldivian farming. The plantation is part of efforts supported by local initiatives to diversify agriculture on small islands.

Coffee cultivation faces challenges in the tropical climate, but the successful harvest shows potential for specialised crops. The farm also offers visits and sells produce to local kitchens.

This development comes as the Maldives seeks to boost food security and reduce imports of specialty items. Further trials are expected to assess yield and quality for possible commercial production.
