Public consultations have started on 13 islands as part of the 15-megawatt solar package of the Accelerating Renewable Energy Integration and Sustainable Energy (ARISE) project.

The package covers solar power installations, upgrades and expansion of island electricity grids, and the establishment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy said the consultations are intended to inform residents about the project’s objectives and the benefits of solar power generation in the Maldives. They also explain how residents can raise concerns and submit complaints.

Recent meetings were held in Funadhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, and in Maabaidhoo and Kunahandhoo in Laamu Atoll. Island council representatives and officials from utility providers attended and answered questions from residents.

Participants discussed feedback on the project and broader efforts to support the country’s transition to cleaner energy.

The ARISE project forms part of wider government initiatives to expand renewable energy capacity across the atolls. Officials have stated that multiple solar installations are under way and that a significant number of renewable projects are expected to be completed by the end of next year.
