Pakistan has announced it will gift 100,000 olive tree cuttings and 100,000 seeds of various tree and plant species to support the Maldives' five million tree planting programme.

The announcement was made by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif following official talks with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during the latter's ongoing state visit to Pakistan.

In a joint statement, Sharif described the Maldives as a close brotherly nation and affirmed full support for President Muizzu's environmental initiatives. He stated that the materials would be provided within a specified period under mutually agreed principles.

The five million tree programme is a flagship environmental effort in the Maldives aimed at increasing green cover and addressing climate challenges. Support from other countries has been sought for the initiative.

The pledge forms part of broader cooperation agreements signed during the visit, which also cover trade, health and other sectors.
