The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a white alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms covering the area from L. Atoll to Addu City.
The alert is valid from 6:00 pm to midnight. MET expects heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms during this period.
Previous alerts had been issued for southern atolls, and some islands have already recorded flooding linked to heavy rainfall. Satellite imagery shows extensive cloud cover over central and southern parts of the country.
The Maldives is in the northeast monsoon season, during which lighter winds and variable rainfall are typical. MET has indicated that the whole country is likely to experience rain over the coming week.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to stay alert.
