The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned that air quality across the country is expected to deteriorate further over the next two days, with the most significant effects likely in Malé and the northern regions.
Speaking to state media, the agency said the haze currently affecting the Maldives is likely to impact several parts of the country during this period. Reduced air quality is also anticipated in the southern atolls, though conditions are forecast to improve by the third day.
Air quality levels have already worsened compared to earlier in the week. Data from monitoring systems show the Air Quality Index currently exceeds 68 in most areas. In Malé, the AQI has reached 113, while equipment at the Maldives National University Centre for Maritime Studies campus in Villimalé recorded 157.
An AQI reading above 50 is generally classified as moderate, and experts note that precautionary measures should be considered at this level. When levels exceed 100, health risks may increase for sensitive groups, including children, the elderly and people with respiratory conditions.
The Health Protection Agency has previously advised people with lung or heart conditions to limit time outdoors during similar haze events. The phenomenon is commonly linked to fine particles carried by seasonal winds from the Indian subcontinent.
The government has stated it continues to work with regional and international partners on longer-term measures to strengthen air quality management.
