The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned of deteriorating weather from Saturday through Wednesday, with scattered heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and rough seas likely as the southwest monsoon strengthens.
The Met Office said some areas may experience heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms, while others could see intermittent showers. Surface winds are forecast to remain generally moderate, between 5 and 15 miles per hour, although gusts could reach up to 40 miles per hour during squalls.
Seas are expected to become rough during periods of heavy rain, creating hazardous conditions for seafarers. The advisory is particularly relevant for fishing vessels, speedboats and inter-island transport. Reduced visibility and sudden wind increases are possible during thunderstorms.
The forecast follows a period of unsettled conditions associated with the monsoon. Officials advised the public, especially those travelling by sea, to exercise caution and monitor updates. The Met Office has issued related alerts in recent days covering parts of the central and northern atolls.
No specific wind-speed thresholds requiring a formal cyclone or severe storm warning have been highlighted in the latest advisory, but the combination of rain and gusty conditions is expected to affect maritime activity.
