A specialised technical training programme on greenhouse cultivation has started at the Maldives Agribusiness Programme demo greenhouse in Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo.
The programme has drawn 22 participants representing seven islands. It focuses on the commercial and sustainable production of cucumbers and melons.
Organised by the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources in partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the training aims to build practical skills in protected agriculture and climate-smart techniques.
Participants receive hands-on instruction in crop nutrition, irrigation scheduling, greenhouse climate control and post-harvest handling. The approach uses soilless media such as coco peat to manage pests, optimise water use and protect yields against weather variability.
The Hanimaadhoo session forms part of the broader Maldives Agribusiness Programme targeting agricultural development across 26 islands in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani Atolls. By establishing demonstration sites and training lead farmers, the ministry seeks to create decentralised agricultural hubs.
Protected cropping is intended to increase local production of high-value crops and strengthen food security and climate resilience in the northern atolls. The programme continues with practical sessions at the demo facility.
