A specialised technical training programme on greenhouse cultivation has begun at the Maldives Agribusiness Programme (MAP) Demo Greenhouse in Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo.

The programme has drawn 22 participants representing seven islands and focuses on the commercial and sustainable production of cucumbers and melons. Organised by the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources in partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), it aims to expand modern, climate-smart farming techniques across the northern atolls.

The training forms part of the broader MAP project, which targets agricultural development across 26 islands in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani Atolls. By emphasising protected cropping environments using soilless media such as coco peat, the project helps growers manage pests, optimise water use and protect yields against variable weather.

Participants receive practical instruction in crop nutrition, irrigation scheduling, greenhouse climate control and post-harvest handling tailored to high-value crops.

The ministry intends to establish demonstration sites and train lead farmers to create decentralised agricultural hubs, supporting local produce and greater climate resilience.
