The Maldives is recording import volumes at levels not previously seen, even on a single day, according to Economic Development, Transport and Trade Minister Mohamed Saeed.
Speaking at the opening of the Maldives Maritime Conference, Saeed said tourism-sector projects worth approximately $11 billion are under way. He noted that the existing commercial harbour faces challenges unloading goods, with around 3,000 containers present at the time of his remarks and roughly 5,000 going through clearance processes.
The previous day had marked the highest number of container clearances initiated by Maldives Ports Limited. Saeed described the trend as evidence of business activity that is strengthening the economy, even as the country manages higher energy costs and softer tourism receipts.
He reiterated plans for a modern harbour by around November 2028 that would address long-standing constraints on trade.
