Maldives and Pakistan have agreed to explore the establishment of direct flights as part of efforts to strengthen tourism and commercial ties during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit.
The possibility of direct air services was discussed alongside the exchange of 20 memoranda of understanding covering a broad range of sectors. Both sides noted that improved connectivity would support the shared target of raising bilateral trade to $200 million within two years and would make it easier for tourists and business travellers to move between the two countries.
Tourism remains a central pillar of the Maldivian economy, and Pakistan has expressed interest in promoting travel links, including potential opportunities related to halal tourism. Officials indicated that technical discussions on air services would follow the high-level political agreements.
The visit has also produced understandings on defence, fisheries, healthcare, education and technology. Implementation of the connectivity measures will depend on further negotiations between aviation authorities and carriers from both countries.
