Maldives re-export earnings reach USD 315 million as sea-to-air cargo expands

Re-export earnings in the first nine months of 2026 rose 48.5 percent year-on-year, driven largely by jet fuel sales and growth in sea-to-air logistics.

The Maldives recorded USD 314.9 million in re-export earnings during the first nine months of 2026, an increase of 48.5 percent from USD 212 million in the same period last year, according to Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) statistics.

The figure already exceeds the full-year total of USD 299.2 million recorded in 2025.

Jet fuel remained the largest component, generating USD 255.8 million in January–September 2026 compared with USD 167.9 million a year earlier. It accounted for more than four-fifths of total re-export value and drove most of the growth.

The increase coincides with the expansion of sea-to-air cargo services, introduced in May 2024. The service allows goods arriving by sea to be transferred to international flights for onward delivery. More than 17 airlines have participated.

In July 2026, 633 tonnes of cargo were shipped through the service, an 88 percent increase from 335 tonnes in June. Shipments that month were handled by six airlines to 10 countries.

Maldives Ports Limited and Maldives Airports Company Limited operate the sea-to-air facility at Velana International Airport as part of efforts to develop the country as a logistics hub.
